A rather lovely Jubilee party Category: Cooking with..., Other Foodiness, Uncategorized

We decided to have a little family tea party last weekend for the Queens Diamond Jubilee. Elodie was excited and helped me write a list of what food to make. She even helped make the scones and sandwiches.

Luckily we were only holding our party indoors as the weather on the day was nothing short of wet and miserable.

We made homemade bunting and Elodie made some Union Jack paper chains in Playshool along with a crown. She wore a red, white & blue outfit and had a flag she had made at the library the week before. And of course being 3 meant that the party had to have party games! So after enjoying her afternoon tea party of sandwiches, cakes and scones we got to play musical statues, pin the crown on the Queen and pass the parcel (thank goodness for a packet of buttons in the fridge!)

She really enjoyed the party and with going to watch the Olympic Torch go past on the Friday evening it made for a fun packed bank holiday weekend.

The Menu

  • Egg & Cucumber sandwiches
  • Coronation Chicken sandwiches
  • Ham sandwiches
  • Salad
  • Homemade sausage rolls
  • Crisps
  • Cupcakes
  • Mini scones with fresh cream strawberries
  • A bowl of fresh strawberries

Birthday Cake – Newcastle Shirt Category: Uncategorized

A colleague in work asked me if I would like to bake her a cake for her partners 50th in the shape of a Newcastle football shirt.

I looked into getting a Wliton T-Shirt shaped tin but found (a) they are discontinued – why?! (b) cake shops on the internet don’t hire tins over the web (c) my local trusty cake shop have shaped tins but not in the shape of a t-shirt. I thought it was going to be a bit easier but hey ho shaping the cake was the only way to go.

I hired a 10″ square tin and the cake ended up being approximately 10″ by 9″ so I didn’t waste too much cake.

I had asked Anthony to print off a template for me to use but for one reason or another he could get it printed to the right size so I had to free-style a template based on the smaller one.  I have to say though, I was happy with the size and shape.

The cake was filled with raspberry jam and buttercream then had a buttercream layer applied to help stick the icing on.  I had to roll out the icing for the cake as well, in the past I have managed to get away with a pre-rolled icing but the cake was far too big for that!

I had invested in an icing smoother & was happy with the results – I think it was noticeably smoother, shiny icing.

Then I covered it in black stripes.  Again I free-styled the first one and traced around it to make the other one the same.  The middle strip and sponsor badge completed the design.

The cake made it to work for the handover after a 40 minute drive into Chester. Nervewracking! I just hope it tasted nice when it was eaten yesterday.

A little updating and possible changing Category: Uncategorized

There probably aren’t many readers left following my lack of posts over the last 2 years but I do keep meaning to blog more, so to try & make me a more active blogger I am changing it slightly to include 2 new categories/sections – Cooking with… and Cooking for… both of which will be more toddler/children focused.

Elodie is taking more and more interest in the kitchen and what happens in there and often wants to see what is going on on the worktops and hob so with that in mind I am going to try & include more on what I make for her and what things she can help with.  She has already helped me in trying out Pudsey cookies and enjoyed helping to roll out the dough and watch the process of mixing, rolling, cutting, baking and then the best bit – eating!

So there you go, hopefully we’ll get to write and photo some cooking soon.

Another cake stand for my collection, this time one for my favourite little cupcakes. I also finally managed to pick up the piping nozzle I’ve been after for a while…
